At The Range

It was good to get back out to the local pistol range this afternoon and shoot.  I have always enjoyed shooting and have missed the self competition as well as the stress relief that punching holes in targets brings me.

The range, to which I belong, is private and has a limited number of members this allows me the opportunity to shoot when I want without having to wait in line for a free bay… well most of the time.  I continually recommend target shooting to my friends as a hobby and as a sport.  Anyone can get involved in shooting because it does not have a difficult learning curve, but one should seek instruction from skilled, certified range staff.

Characters

One of the hardest aspects of writing is putting together believable interesting characters. Even though I may have an idea for the story line in mind I don’t always have a firm lock on the characters description or what their individual personalities will be like. I seem to alway piece together each character from the many people I have met and written about in my journal, then throw in a little mystery and imagination to round them out. This formula has worked well for me, although I have to tone down some of them and boost some others to make them seem real.

I once had a writing teacher who told me that a character is only as real as the writer makes him or her. If the character does not have a role in the story that brings delight, horror, love, hate, etc… to the story then don’t waste your time developing that person. One of the best characters that I wrote about was an old man who comes out of the night into a pub. He is dirty, wet, and foul, but determined to have a drink. I described his disfigured face in detail while recounting how the old man watches the rest of the pub dwellers and waits for the bar keep. The place is silent as the other patrons wait for something to happen… then the bar keep quickly walks up to the old man and yells “GET OUT!”, where about the old guy raises his hand, now holding a revolver, shots the bar keep through his open mouth, spraying blood and brains across the room, then calmly gets up and leaves. The character of the old man was wonderful and is only mentioned again in the end of story when he repeats his actions in another pub.

It is the writer’s mission to make each character something special, or so I believe.

Saturday

This Saturday was a treat for me, I got to spend the entire day with my 4-year-old grandson, Murphy.  We spent the day working in the garden, playing with a bucket of toy soldiers, and an Iron Man figure.  This bright little guy is a bundle of nearly uncontrollable energy that, at times, needs carefully channeling for everyone’s good.  While grandpa and grandma spent the morning and early afternoon working at getting tomato plants and such planted Murphy busied himself digging holes… the garden on one side now looks like an old mortar range.

This member of the future generation is full of life and love, he wants so very much to be part of everything happening around him, and like all little boys he likes to rough house.  He is a handful at time, but that is what being a little boy is all about.

I realized watching him play that my generation and his parent’s are responsible for making sure that we do all we can to leave a workable future for his generation, not one filled with wars and hate.

Let us hope that we may learn to “Make War No More”.

Friday Night…

It is the end of the work week (At least for most of us.) and the weekend looms bright in the near future (Except in Portland where it will probably rain.).  My list of priorities is to plays with my grandson, work in the garden with my grandson, give my wife a hard time ( I do this most everyday.) and to spend some time writing; this all depends on if it rains!

The boy…

The last week was filled with appointments, writing, and watching the news about Osama bin Ladin’s death at the hands of a team of Navy SEALs.  I am not going to a debate the release of death pictures, but will say that the government needs to find a way to satisfy the nation’s and the world’s need-to-know.

I Have Returned…

Something I have learned over my 60+ years is that nothing in life is guaranteed.  During my years I have enjoyed testing myself against some of the best soldiers the US Military has to offer, all branches, and I held my own.  Now I am suffering, it seems, from going to places no sane person would want to go and subjecting my body to physical abuse and health risks…  all in the line of duty.  Well, I was once told that if you’re going to play, you’re going to pay.  And you know what, I wouldn’t change anything, I have no regrets.

More tomorrow – - – I promise.
